Spoiler free mini review – An ambitious story on a shoestring budget. Even it’s clever polysemous title can’t save it from a convoluted plot that doesn’t amount to anything really meaningful.
Site is a movie that’s made up of a solid foundation with an interesting concept, ambitious direction, and a talented cast that can’t find a way to maintain its better efforts along the way. – Screen Rant
Site made me feel nostalgic, but maybe not in the good way. This film genuinely feels like it could have been plucked of the Sci-fi channel as a bloated episode of Sliders from 2000. Which, depending on who you are, that could be sick or have you saying, as if! Site is clearly affected by a smaller budget which rings through in some of the special effects and some of the set pieces, but a small budget doesn’t necessary always mean bad. You can overcome a miniscule budget with great writing or creativity, just look at Clerks, Napoleon Dynamite or Eraserhead.
The plot has more holes than – I don’t know, name something that’s holier than swiss cheese. Even if the plot was tighter, it would still be too convoluted and disjointed to have any semblance of gravitas. The character Garrison smokes a marijuana vape pen throughout the film and I think that might have been left on the craft table by the writer/director.
The acting in Site is serviceable. The movie-going layperson might recognize a few faces, but there isn’t a ton of star power here. I believe the actors did a great job, given the source material and did their best to further the story. The acting in general neither derails nor shines through.
My hot take is that this movie would have been much better without the sci-fi and history elements. Just a guy separated from his wife due to his past mistakes, trying to get back in her good graces, but accidentally blinds their kid in a motorcycle accident and works really hard to make it right.
Anyways, I would recommend this to any fans of old Sci-Fi Channel originals, die-hard fans of Theo Rossi or Sons of Anarchy, and anyone who doesn’t mind a cheesy and hard to follow plot.
